Welcome to Grow A Spine. After more than a decade helping authors write nonfiction books and discovering that most faced the same hurdles, I decided to map out a process that would get them from A to Z without a lot of backtracking and rework. Thus was born this blog, where I’ll offer guidance, industry intel, reviews of books from a writer’s perspective, and a series of forty assignments or writing prompts designed to help you develop a strong first draft.
A little about me, Lari Bishop, your host. I’m a senior editor for a small publisher that follows a hybrid publishing model—part self-publishing and part traditional. As senior editor, I work with bestselling authors who are in the early stages of book development and coach them through the process. We brainstorm ideas, test concepts for market viability, discuss audience, create detailed outlines, refine voice and style, and so on. It’s some of my favorite work. I’m also a ghostwriter and developmental editor. I’ve worked as a developmental editor for a New York house, I’ve spent time in production roles, and I have a master’s degree in journalism from New York University. As a coach, I’m known for being frank but compassionate and for pushing my authors to make their books great.
I hope you find this blog to be helpful. Please comment on the articles, share your insights, and send me questions on the contact page. I’d love to hear from you.
